Same Day Crowns

Same Day Crowns

A dental crown normally means two appointments, a temporary crown, and a one-to-two-week wait while a laboratory makes the final restoration. At Divine Dental Care in Croydon, suitable cases can be scanned, designed, milled, and fitted in a single visit — you walk out with the finished ceramic crown bonded in place.

How Same-Day Crown Technology Works

Divine Dental Care uses a digital scan-and-mill workflow — a computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) system that allows dental crowns to be designed, milled, and fitted in a single appointment, offering a streamlined alternative to the traditional crown process.

A digital scanner captures a precise 3D image of the prepared tooth, replacing the need for traditional putty impressions. The crown is then designed on screen and milled from a solid block of high-quality ceramic right here in the practice.

  • Digital scanning replaces traditional putty impressions
  • Crowns designed and milled chairside in the practice
  • High-quality ceramic material for a natural appearance

The Same-Day Crown Process

The process begins with your dentist preparing the tooth, just as with a conventional crown. Once the tooth is ready, a digital scan is taken using an intraoral camera. This scan creates a detailed 3D model of the tooth and surrounding area.

Your dentist then uses specialised software to design the crown on a computer, tailoring the shape, size, and contour to match your natural bite. The design is sent to an in-office milling unit, which carves the crown from a ceramic block in approximately 10 to 15 minutes.

After milling, the crown is checked for fit and colour match, then bonded to the prepared tooth. The entire process is typically completed within a single visit.

  • Tooth is prepared and digitally scanned
  • Crown is designed on screen using 3D software
  • Ceramic crown is milled in-office in approximately 10 to 15 minutes
  • Crown is fitted, adjusted, and bonded during the same appointment

Same-Day vs Traditional Crowns

Same-Day Crown Traditional Crown
Appointments One Two or more
Impressions Digital scan Putty impressions or scan
Temporary crown Not needed Worn for 1–2 weeks
Made Milled on-site during your visit External dental laboratory
Best for Many single-tooth restorations Complex cases your dentist will identify

Neither option is universally better — some teeth and bites are still best served by a laboratory-made crown. Your dentist will examine the tooth and recommend the approach that suits your case. For more on traditional crowns and multi-tooth restorations, see our crowns and bridges page.

When Is a Crown the Right Choice?

Crowns are commonly recommended when a tooth is too damaged for a filling but doesn't need to be replaced. Typical situations include:

  • A cracked tooth, where the crown holds the tooth together and protects it from further damage
  • A tooth with a large, failing filling that has little natural structure left
  • A tooth weakened after root canal treatment
  • A heavily worn or fractured tooth that needs its shape and strength rebuilt

Advantages of Same-Day Crowns

Same-day crowns offer a number of practical advantages compared to the traditional two-visit crown process. Because the crown is made and fitted in one appointment, there is no need for a temporary crown and no waiting period for a dental laboratory to fabricate the restoration.

The ceramic material used in same-day crowns is tooth-coloured and designed to blend with your natural teeth. It is a durable material suitable for a range of restorative situations.

  • Completed in a single appointment with no second visit required
  • No temporary crown needed
  • Digital impressions are more comfortable than traditional moulds
  • Tooth-coloured ceramic for a natural-looking result
  • Precise computer-aided design for an accurate fit

Same-Day Crowns for Croydon and Surrounds

One visit instead of two matters most when getting to the dentist takes planning. Our patients come from across the Maroondah area — Croydon, Croydon Hills, Croydon North, Croydon South, Mooroolbark, Kilsyth, Heathmont, Ringwood, and Bayswater — and a same-day crown means one trip, one round of anaesthetic, and no return visit to fit the final restoration.

We're at 59 Wicklow Avenue, Croydon — about two minutes from Croydon Station, with free parking on site. We're open Monday to Friday 8:30am to 6pm and Saturday 8:30am to 5pm, so a crown can be done on a Saturday without taking time off work. Call (03) 9725 8040 or book online.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a crown really be made the same day?

Yes, for suitable cases. The tooth is prepared, digitally scanned, and the ceramic crown is designed and milled on-site during your appointment — preparation, scanning, milling, and fitting are typically completed in a single visit at our Croydon practice.

Are same-day crowns a good idea?

For many restorative situations, a same-day crown means one appointment, one round of anaesthetic, and no temporary crown. Some cases are still better suited to a traditional laboratory-made crown — your dentist will assess your tooth and recommend the option that fits your situation.

Do you use CEREC?

No — CEREC is one brand of same-day crown system. Divine Dental Care uses its own digital scan-and-mill (CAD/CAM) workflow: an intraoral scanner captures the prepared tooth, the crown is designed on screen, and an in-house milling unit carves it from a ceramic block during your visit.

Are same-day crowns as durable as traditional crowns?

Same-day crowns are milled from high-quality ceramic and are designed to be a durable restoration. Your dentist can discuss whether a same-day crown is appropriate for your specific situation.

Do I need a temporary crown with a same-day crown?

No, because the crown is designed and milled on-site during your appointment, there is no need for a temporary crown or a second visit.

How much does a same-day crown cost?

The cost of a crown depends on the material, the tooth being restored, and whether preparatory work such as a core build-up or root canal is needed first. We provide a written quote with item numbers before any treatment starts, and as a preferred provider for major health funds we can check your rebate on the spot. Our guide to dental crown costs explains what determines the price.

Is the digital scanning uncomfortable?

Digital scanning uses a small intraoral camera and is generally more comfortable than traditional putty impressions.

Can any tooth be restored with a same-day crown?

Same-day crowns are suitable for many restorative situations, but your dentist will assess your tooth to determine whether this option is appropriate for your case.
