Why Wear a Sports Mouthguard

A sports mouthguard is a protective device worn over the teeth to help reduce the risk of dental injuries during physical activity. Mouthguards can help protect the teeth, gums, lips, and jaw from impact that may occur during sport.

Wearing a mouthguard is particularly important for contact sports such as football, rugby, basketball, hockey, and martial arts, as well as activities that carry a risk of falls or facial impact, including cycling, skateboarding, and cricket. Custom-fitted mouthguards made by a dentist generally offer a more precise fit compared to store-bought options, which can help with comfort, retention, and the level of protection provided.

Custom vs Store-Bought Mouthguards

There are several types of mouthguards available, and they differ in how they are made, how well they fit, and the level of protection they may offer.

  • Custom-fitted mouthguards — made from an impression or digital scan of your teeth, fabricated in a dental laboratory to fit the exact shape of your mouth. They are designed to sit comfortably and securely, allowing you to speak and breathe without difficulty during activity
  • Boil-and-bite mouthguards — purchased from a pharmacy or sports store, softened in hot water and then moulded around the teeth by biting down. These provide a more general fit and may feel bulky or loose compared to a custom option
  • Stock mouthguards — pre-formed and ready to wear straight from the packet. They come in limited sizes, cannot be adjusted, and may offer less retention and comfort

Your dentist can advise you on which type of mouthguard may be most suitable based on the sport you play and the level of protection you need.

Getting a Custom Mouthguard

Having a custom mouthguard made is a straightforward process that typically involves two short appointments.

  • Impression or scan — at the first visit, your dentist takes a dental impression or digital scan of your teeth, which is used to create an accurate model of your mouth
  • Laboratory fabrication — the model is sent to a dental laboratory where your mouthguard is custom-made using durable, protective materials
  • Fitting appointment — at the follow-up visit, the finished mouthguard is tried in and adjusted if necessary to ensure a comfortable and secure fit

Custom mouthguards are available in a range of colours and can be personalised with team colours if preferred. It is generally recommended to replace your mouthguard each season or when it shows signs of wear, as the material can thin over time. This is especially important for children and adolescents, whose jaws and teeth are still growing and changing. Visit our Croydon clinic to discuss your sports protection needs with your dentist.
